Richard is such a lovely, positive character, that he needed something to counterbalance that cuteness of his. Roomie has her alcohol problems (among other things), Ramona is a rage bucket, Lillian is a perfect Dream Queen but has issues of her own, and Richard, well, he can be a sourpuss of an emo in very specific moments (or something to that effect) :D
